Glaucoma
What it is
Glaucoma is progressive optic nerve damage that can lead to irreversible vision loss. Early stages often cause no symptoms, which is what makes screening essential.
Key idea
High eye pressure is a major risk factor, but glaucoma can also occur with normal eye pressure.
How we evaluate
The examination typically includes eye pressure measurement, corneal thickness assessment (pachymetry), optic nerve evaluation, and angle assessment (gonioscopy) when needed. Additional testing, such as OCT or visual field testing, may be recommended depending on findings and availability.
Treatment overview
First-line treatment usually involves pressure-lowering eye drops. Laser and surgical treatments are used in selected cases in specialized centres.
In our clinic, we focus on detection, risk stratification, treatment planning, and follow-up. Screening matters especially after the age of 40, or earlier if risk factors are present.
